Dorin found this video on youtube with Antoine D’Agata of Magnum at the Viktor Marushchenko school of photography and I found it very interesting. It is in French, which is indeed one of my languages so it wasn’t a problem, but, if you can take a look. What better time than now! It’s freezing outside today!

Project: HOSPICE ANGELUS

Dorin Goian traveled with the “Hospice Angelus” team in 2011 to present his unique and personal view on the work with terminally ill patients in Moldova.”

‘Angelus Moldova’ is a charitable organization based in Chisinau, the capital city of the Republic of Moldova.

Moldova is an independent republic with a population of 4 million, bordering Romania and Ukraine.

In recently history, Moldova has experienced a turbulent position being one the poorest countries in Europe.

Cancer patients throughout Moldova can currently undergo treatments at the central “1010 bed” cancer hospital in Chişinau, however, with no existing home-care service in place, families are forced to cope once patients and their loved one’s are discharged.

In 2002, a local surgeon, Dr. Valerian Isac, recognized the desperate need for care and established Hospice Angelus as the first provider of palliative care in Moldova.

The primary goal of the organization is to provide medical, social, spiritual and psychological care to patients with incurable and terminal illnesses.

The concept of hospice care began in the UK in the 1960’s and is now commonplace throughout the Western world, however because of the lack of sufficient education and economic resources, the provision of palliative care is not considered a priority in countries like Moldova and each year there are approximately 8000 people in Moldova that are diagnosed with cancer and only a fraction of these people are able get the necessary care.

Dorin’s work captures some of the conditions that are currently ongoing in Moldova.

We are happy to say that Dorin Goian is a part of Reportage Republik.

Dorin is an awesome photographer and is currently based in Chisinau, Moldova where he is working on several post Soviet documentaries.
